    Homeless encampment in East Austin closed down as a result of ‘high wildfire danger’

    AUSTIN, Texas – A homeless encampment in East Austin was closed down after the city claimed it was situated on “high-wildfire-risk” land.

    The backstory:

    The City of Austin’s Homeless Approach Workplace (HSO) claimed it closed down 37 acres of land near the junction of westbound Ben White Blvd and Montopolis Drive.

    Thirty-two individuals at the homeless encampment were transferred to the Northbridge and Southbridge sanctuaries.

    The Austin Fire Division reacted to 35 fire-related telephone calls at the encampment in 2024.
